How Screen Shades Work
Screen shades are made from an open-weave mesh fabric that allows a controlled amount of light and air to pass through. Unlike blackout or translucent shades, screen shades are specifically engineered to reduce solar glare and heat gain while preserving your view to the outside during daylight hours.
The degree of openness in the weave determines how much light passes through and how clearly you can see outside. A tighter weave provides more solar protection and privacy; a more open weave lets in more light and offers a clearer outward view.
Important: nighttime privacy
Screen shades do not provide privacy at night. When interior lights are on after dark, the fabric becomes transparent from the outside — people outside can see into your space. If nighttime privacy is a priority, we recommend pairing screen shades with a secondary treatment such as blackout or translucent shades.
Openness Options
We manufacture screen shades in three openness levels. Each offers a different balance between solar protection, outward visibility, and privacy.

1% Openness
The tightest weave we offer. Provides the greatest reduction of glare and solar exposure, and the most daytime privacy of the three options. Outward visibility is limited but still present. Best suited for spaces where solar control is the top priority.

3% Openness
A balanced middle option. Offers meaningful glare and solar reduction while allowing a clearer outward view than the 1% fabric. A popular choice for living rooms, offices, and spaces where both solar control and visibility matter.
5%
5% Openness
The most open weave. Provides the clearest outward view and the most natural light of the three options, with moderate glare reduction. Best for spaces where preserving the view is the primary goal and solar exposure is less of a concern.
